Dr. A. Vanniarajan received his Bachelors and Masters in Zoology (Biotechnology) from The American College, Madurai in 2001. He obtained his PhD in Life Sciences (Mitochondrial genetics) from Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India in 2007. He did his postdoctoral fellowship in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, USA from 2007 to 2011 in the field of cancer genetics.
He joined AMRF as scientist in 2011 and his research interest spans around basic and translational research of eye diseases. Specifically, he is interested in understanding the molecular basis of mitochondrial diseases with ophthalmic manifestations; identification of mitochondrial biomarkers of retinoblastoma; analysis of mitochondrial DNA damage and repair in age-related macular degeneration; genetic characterization of microorganisms involved in ocular infections.
He has published 19 scientific papers and recipient of several awards including the Child Scientist Award from National Child Science congress (1993) and Young Scientist Award from Indian Society of Human Genetics (2007). He obtained the National Merit Scholarship for his graduate education and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research fellowship for pursuing his PhD work.
