Scientist, Proteomics Department

Dr. J. Jeya Maheshwari has completed her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Master of Philosophy in Biochemistry from Madras University. After a brief work experience in the corporate sector, she joined Madurai Kamaraj University for the Post-M.Sc Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics in 2002. Later, she pursued her Ph.D under the supervision of Prof. K. Dharmalingam in the Genetic Engineering Research Unit availing ICMR fellowship. During her Ph.D tenure, she worked extensively in characterizing the functional and structural aspects of a small heat shock protein (sHsp18) from Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy. She made significant contributions in deciphering the role of this sHsp18 in the infection process. She received her Ph.D from Madurai Kamaraj University in 2011. She availed the fellowship from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India to carry out her post-doctoral work in fungal keratitis at the Proteomics Department in Aravind Medical Research Foundation.
Currently, her research interests lie in three major eye diseases Fungal Keratitis, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy. She employs proteomics approach to understand the pathogenesis underlying these diseases. The studies are aimed towards the discovery of a biomarker for early diagnostics or targets for better therapeutics.
