Dr. SR. Rathinam received M.B.B.S from Madurai University in 1983, Diploma in Ophthalmology and MNAMS. (Oph) from Aravind Eye Hospital in the year 1988, 1990 respectively. She received her Ph.D from The T.N.Dr.MGR Medical University in 2005. She is the first medical doctor to receive PhD at Aravind.
Dr. SR. Rathinam is heading the uveitis clinic at Aravind Eye Hospital which has established into a full-fledged sub-speciality clinic offering fellowships in uveitis. It is one of the very few fulltime uveitis clinics in India.
Besides the clinical and academic career she has a very strong research focus in her work. Her work on leptospirosis has been path breaking and many projects have been undertaken to understand its pathogenesis. The work on leptospirosis, the largest series ever reported has helped in characterization of leptospiral uveitis. Her work on Trematode induced granulomatous uveitis, a parasitic eye disease, has dramatically changed the management protocol of this paediatric endemic uveitis, saving vision of children in south India. Her work in this field resulted in recognition of a new paediatric uveitic entity ever reported.
She had 64 publications in peer reviewed national and international journals and published 13 Book chapters. She is recognized as a PhD guide under the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University and Madurai Kamaraj University
